It is an honor and my great pleasure to announce the establishment of the new Department of Nanobio Materials and Electronics (DNE) in 2009 at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST).
GIST is a research-oriented university with outstanding achievements in various fields of advanced research. The new DNE follows the tradition of GIST for excellence in science and technology with an obligation to academic leadership on a global level.


As part of the ‘World-Class University’ program of KOSEF, the DNE is funded by the Korean Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology (MEST) with a grant of 30 Billion Won (about US $25 million) for a 5-year term. The aim of this ambitious initiative of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology is to transform selected Korean universities into world-class universities by attracting internationally renowned scholars.
The new interdisciplinary department DNE has now been added to the five existing departments at GIST, which comprise Information and Communications, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechatronics, Environmental Science and Engineering, and Life Science. Embedded in GIST, the DNE is aiming at being a capable and serious front-runner in the global research arena.

 
 

We are deeply thankful to KOSEF for the financial support, enabling us to involve 18 domestic faculty from three different departments, the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Information and Communication, and Mechatronics at GISTto conduct high level research. In addition, 10 international faculty from universities all over the globewill be members of the WCU department.
All particpating professors are teaching and collaborating for excellence in the interdisciplinary area of nano-bio-info fusion technology (NBIT). The research part of this program will also include 40-60 postdocs and the teaching and training program will comprise 40 M.Sc. and 20 Ph.D. students per year.

 

We expect that the synergy of this unique system and collaborations will produce outstanding results that will place our university internationally at the forefront within the respective research areas

  • Our department will maximize the research capability in the interdisciplinary field of nanobiomaterials and electronics with world-class faculty of different scientific background. We will be developing materials, technology, and devicesthe nanobio-information field through the multidisciplinary NT-BT-IT system.
  • The DNE will provide Masterand Ph.D. courses for the development of modern bionics fusion technology.

The WCU program is very ambitious and challenging. For example, it required the restructuring of the university administration due to the addition of a new department. Further steps include the establishment of first-class facilities and the purchase of state-of-the-art equipment. In conjunction with leading experts and scholars from all over the world at our department, we will be able to provide the base for world-class research and achievements.

It is my privilege to invite and welcome oustanding scientists and researchers to our new Department of Nanobio Materials and Electronics! We also embrace and welcome all motivated and qualified students!
We are honored to host and welcome the salient international professors from many different countries, who will work and collaborate with us in this university. In both research and teaching, we strive to reach and maintain world-class levels of performance aimed at the global improvement of human life in the 21st century.
